But Only God

It’s all too rare that Katherine and I get to read the Scriptures together, but tonight we continued working our way through 1 Corinthians. The last time we read together was a few weeks ago and we really appreciated putting time aside tonight to engage with God’s Word and think about it together.

I was really challenged by Paul’s declaration that “neither he who plants nor he who waters, is anything, but only God, who makes things grow” (1 Corinthians 3:7). I found this an astonishing statement. Humility is something by which I am captivated, and the Scriptures have convinced me that it is the chief value in the Kingdom of God. But for Paul to say that he is nothing is incredible – he after all is the expert builder (1 Cornithians 3:10). How much more so should we then regard ourselves with humility?

And yet God has given us the privilege of being his fellow workers (1 Corinthians 3:9). This is obviously nothing to do with what we can contribute to building God’s kingdom, because it is God who makes things grow. What a privilege! What a joy!

Let us then be careful how we build, “for noone can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 3:11).
